Free your Mind "
Peace to be real must be unaffected by outside circumstance.
" - M. Ghandi True freedom is gained and maintained from within. It simply does not matter whether others believe in you or agree with you - the only person who has the right to determine your self-esteem is yourself. (That's why it's called SELF-esteem). Most people are dependent on an external reference for their self-esteem: their popularity with their peers, their recognition by their superiors, their acceptance by their authority figures. All of these are irrelevant. If you are dependent upon someone else's opinion for your mental well-being, you are always at the mercy of their whims and fancies derived from their reality model. The development of your own reality model is crucial to this process. How life actually works is really an opinion, nothing more, and there are plenty of them around. If you resolve to work it out for yourself rather than buy into someone else's reality map, you are firstly taking personal responsibility, and secondly create the freedom to think for yourself. It's harder work, but the benefits are well worth the effort. If you think pretty much the same as everyone else in your circle of acquaintances, then perhaps you are a clone of society rather than an individual - what separates you from everyone else? Personal freedom also has consequences, and sometimes that may mean choosing not to mix with a certain individual or group because their views or values are incompatible with your own. In the final analysis, however, the right to self-determination is fuelled by the ability to decide for yourself, to be free of the influences of the external environment, to demand the right to Think for Yourself...
